FREE CONCERTS in the (VILLA) PARK
Forget Disneyland.... the happiest place in Orange County was Villa Park on two summer evenings when the Concerts in the (Villa) Park rocked the outdoor amphitheater at Villa Park High. Smiles were everywhere on the faces of the largest crowds ever to attend the musical evenings organized by the VPCS Foundation.
Feelin’ Groovy was the July concert theme of the ‘59th Street Bridge’ duo that harmoniously provided a mellow tribute to the sixties tunes of Simon and Garfunkel. Song after song seemed to bring back great memories to most of the senior crowd who were amazed that the time of their life and the concert, too, seemed to zip by so quickly. Oh, yes, just ask Mrs. Robinson...time does fly when you are having fun!
Just prior to ‘The Fenians’ stage performance in August, a dozen local students from the Thistle Academy Irish Dance truly amazed the audience with their clickey clack of hard shoes as well precise stepping to tunes of the homeland. As Mary Poppins might say about their performance, style, attire and hair do’s, they were “practically perfect in every way!”
The basis of ‘The Fenians’ music is definitely Celtic, but their rock and roll flair along with a blend of folk and bluegrass provided no doubt that they belong on the Guinness Wall of Fame. Through their great music and voices, Terry Casey , Rob Williams , Brendan Harkins, Tardu Yegin, and Chris Pierce represent Everyman - sweet and sorrowful; brave and beautiful; angry and amused. And, those who love to dance to the music!
Oh, Danny Boy, what a night!
Special thanks go to our amazing VPHS songbird, Abby Mills, for incredible pre-concert presentations of the “Star Spangled Banner” and to Girl Scouts Kat Tighe and Amelia Gray for leading the pledge of allegiance. The volunteer mom and daughter teams from the Orange-Villa Park Chapter of the National Charity League teams helped in so many ways... welcoming the crowd, selling cookies donated by Colleary’s Bakery, popping Foundation corn for the crowd, and cleaning up the amphitheater after the crowd left. Meanwhile, the VP Rotary wet the whistle of many with their sales of water and soda while Andrew’s Ice Cream dipped cool treats for all to enjoy.
Many THANKS for the financial support for the concerts from Todd Spitzer, our 3rd District Supervisor and the County of Orange along with the Villa Park Women’s League and VP Rotary Club. VPCSF is so appreciative that the Orange Unified School District provided the opportunity to use the VPHS "park" for these community events.
